This fantastic event saw a number teams participating in a round robin festival to welcome the new team to the surrey group of the Chelsea Pensioners. The all afternoon event was also lucky to be underneath the flight path of the VE day celebration fly past - almost as if it had been arranged specially for us. The teams also got to meet Angus Fraser, ex England player and selector.
The penguins got off to a fantastic start, winning their first game comfortably after some attacking batting, which saw them loose very few wickets. Unfortunately Tony Ward pulled his calf whilst batting and battled through to complete his batting overs, having done great work with the ball earlier in the game to set up the win.
The second game against The Change Foundation from Wallington was a thriller. Lent a player whilst fielding, Mick Doran joined us as super sub for the second half of the game and rest of the day. The game went to the final over with Graeme hitting some lusty blows we just missed out on a second win
The last game against Middlesex was another thriller holding on to pip them at the post and record a second win and a second place overall with Simon Gurney, The Emperor Penguin doing a great job of marshalling the team in the cold and blustery conditions.
A wonderful day at a stunning ground, with superb hospitality. Well done the Penguins - Simon, Tony W, Tony K, Mark, Anthony, Paul, Graeme, George & Mick
Thank you to the team at the ground, the pensioners and to Surrey Cricket Foundation for a thrilling day
