6 youth players make debut in open cricket match

Chris Smith8 Jun 2023 - 10:20

The Porpoise team plays first game

The Porpoise team is a combination of Youth Coaches, Senior club players and Officials with half a team of U13/14 youth players who have come through the youth age groups. This is a bridge between age group cricket and "adult cricket," with coaches and adults on field that are DBsd and that the players all know to help guide them along the way, playing against an adult opposition.

The first game saw 6 boys, most of whom have been in the youth section since it started in 2020, alongside the John Coombes (Youth Chair) who skippered, Graeme Marks (Club Chair) Nick Purvis (U14 manager) Harry Prior (regular Midweek player & Youth Coach) & Chris Smith (Head Youth Coach). All bowled 3 over or kept wicket, with 3 wickets between them and four of them batted all scoring runs, almost seeing us home, getting to within 6 runs of Wood Street Village Dad's total.

Many thanks to Wood Street Village CC for making this a reality and for being such a fantastic group for us to play against and hosting us so well. Thanks also to the adults who made it happen, not least the Chairman who showed the boys a masterclass in batting and setting up a platform to score from. I know the coaches and particularly John Coombes, as current Youth Chair, were proud be part of this game, playing alongside these boys who are the future of the club's adult sides.

This is an historic game for the club and its significance will not be lost on the Committee and founding Youth Chair Mick Doran who took the plunge in 2019 to launch the Youth section to secure the future of the club. Some 145 players under the age of 18 and 4 years later their decision has proved to be a great success.
